The science & benefits of CBD

f you’ve tried any of our CBD oil-infused products, you are probably well aware that they are effective, natural remedies. But just, how exactly does CBD oil work? What is it about this botanical compound that makes it so beneficial for so many different ailments, conditions, and moods?

The science of how CBD supports our bodies is still developing, but we do have a basic understanding of why it is so powerful. This article will give you an overview of how CBD works to balance and heal your body.

What Is CBD?

CBD is one of many compounds, known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.  Up until a short while ago, the best-known cannabinoid was delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Marijuana contains both THC and CBD, and both of these compounds affect your body, but in different ways. THC is mind-altering and creates the high people associate with cannabis.

CBD is different. CBD is not psychotropic, meaning it does alter your state of mind, and you cannot get a high from it. However, CBD does have an effect on your body.

How Does CBD Work In Your Body?

All cannabinoids, including CBD, work with specific receptors in your body, CB1, and CB2 receptors. These receptors are active in the human body because we produce certain cannabinoids on our own.

These receptors and our naturally occurring cannabinoids are part of our endocannabinoid system (endo meaning “from the body”). The ECS is made up of receptors, endocannabinoids (your body’s own cannabinoids), and enzymes. Science is still trying to understand this complex system entirely, but what we do know is that the ECS plays a role in sleep, appetite, mood, memory, fertility, and reproduction.

It was once thought that CBD worked by attaching to CB1 and CB2 receptors, but it is now believed that CBD supports our own cannabinoid system, directing our bodies to use more of our own cannabinoids.

The majority of CB1 receptors are in your brain, and depending on which area of your brain, they are located in, they can help to moderate your memory, mood, motor function or perception of pain. CB1 receptors also play a role in pregnancy, hormone production, digestion, and cardiovascular health.

CB1 receptors are what make CBD effective in mood regulation, lowering anxiety,  supporting sleep, and controlling pain.

CB2 receptors are most often found on cells of your immune system.  These receptors affect inflammation and pain. CB2 receptors are what make CBD oil beneficial for combating overactive immune system conditions like asthma, arthritis, allergies, and digestive issues (like IBS).
