You may be wondering what the difference is between hemp oil and CBD, or if there even are any since the two terms are often (incorrectly) used interchangeably. Both oils come from the cannabis plant, but the similarities really end there. They are both safe to use, so there’s no harm in mixing up the two oils, but if you are looking for the many benefits of CBD oil, hemp oil won’t cut it.
Hemp oil, or hempseed oil, comes from the seeds of the hemp variety of the cannabis plant. It is made by pressing the hemp seeds to extract the oil. Hemp oil does not contain any cannabinoids (CBD or THC). Hemp oil is often used as a carrier oil, much like jojoba or coconut.
High in Omega 3, Omega 6, anti-oxidants, Vitamin E, and amino acids, hemp oil is considered a superfood when ingested and is a moisturizing topical oil.
Hemp oil DOES NOT contain cannabinoids and does not have any of the therapeutic benefits of CBD oil.
It is listed on ingredient labels as hemp seed oil, cannabis sativa (hemp) seed oil, virgin hemp oil, and hemp oil. Other names for hemp oil include industrial hemp oil, cannabis seed oil.
CBD oil comes from the leaves, flowers, and stems of the hemp plant. CBD oil contains cannabinoids that work to support your body’s Endocannabinoid system naturally (Learn more about how CBD works on our blog post here).
The cannabinoids found in CBD oil are what gives it it’s anti-inflammatory and balancing abilities. Studies have shown CBD oil can reduce anxiety, support sleep, clear acne, and eczema and relieve muscle and joint pain.
CBD DOES NOT have the mind-altering effects of THC and cannot get you high. CBD also does not have the nutritional benefits of hemp oil.
CBD is listed as CBD, hemp CBD, and phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil. Other names for CBD oil include cannabidiol, hemp extract, hemp extract oil, full spectrum hemp and phytocannabinoid oil.
The confusion is easy to understand given the similarity in ingredient names, the fact they are derived from the same plant (but different parts), and that the oil names are often used interchangeably. The bottom line is, if you are looking for any benefit beyond nutritional support or skin moisturizing, hemp oil cannot give you the results you want. If you are looking for the balancing and restorative effects make sure you are using CBD.
